It’s simple, I feel a story and try to paint it. Painting this last 25+ years is like painting a common conversation I’m having about the world that relates to our own humanity, with the hope and bias, it makes us feel better, see beauty and inspire some strength or a glimmer of reprieve in our short and wonderful lives.
My recent themes focus on the power of children and animals in nature. As a mother and teacher the last 17 years, I feel children often get the brunt of adult problems, our personal issues, policies and politics often seem in direct conflict with what would be helpful to their futures. In their divine innocence, children and animals already know what is right, beautiful and that our differences can make us better as a whole. They connect us to the parts of ourselves, that mirrors the world we know can be better than it sometimes feels; tapping into the raw parts of ourselves that allow us to heal, cry, take action, love and find beauty. These connections are powerful, necessary and often invalidated in service of time, money and “success”.
Technically, I have always been driven by intuition, gesture, color, and mark making, alongside traditional realism. Because it feels more “childlike”, I have been experimenting with abstract expressionism and ways to apply paint. This dance between expression and realism enhances a mood or feeling that is playful, expresses wonder and notes the power and strength in this freedom. Hopefully reminding the viewer that we have had this power and have everything we need within us to make us whole and in turn the ability to make the world better for them.
Animals in Colour line 2020-Present
During Covid, I wanted to paint something that you wake up to everyday, that makes you smile, feel relief and hopeful, like an inspiring affirmation or even a simple deep breath.
Animals have held my attention. Like painting people, animals can connect us to the parts of ourselves, that mirrors the world we know can be better than it sometimes feels; tapping into the raw parts of ourselves that allow us to heal, cry, inspire, love and find beauty.
Animals are historic teachers too. I’m pulling for them like I am people. That we all have a place in the order of things like the platypus. That we can notice our differences and embrace them as what makes us all more beautiful and playful. That our differences can make us better as a whole.
